Why Should You Worry About Home Security?

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

For every person who spends a great deal of thought and effort on ensuring their home is protected, there are several others who never spare a thought for home security and then wonder why their home has been targeted.

Even if you don’t care about your belongings, there are reasons why you should be concerned about home security. Being the victim of theft may make the cost of your insurance premiums rise. It may also make you unpopular with your neighbours, because once your property has been tagged as an easy target, thieves may investigate the houses near you too.

Perhaps the single most motivating factor which gets people thinking about home security is the thought that their families may be involved in a robbery and frightened, threatened or hurt in some way.

Far better to consider home security systems before any of these scenarios comes to fruition.

You don’t have to spend thousands of pounds on CCTV monitoring because a combination of a good alarm system and common sense should put most burglars off.

If you haven’t done already, make sure your doors and windows are well-fitted and with proper locks on them (doors need deadlocks). Keep the exterior of your house well-maintained (otherwise it might give the impression you are away or the house isn’t lived in!) and your garden tidy so thieves can’t hide behind bushes.

Install some exterior lighting and a burglar alarm – these are two of the most important things you can do to boost your home security. Combine these with our other tips, and you can feel safe in the knowledge that your home is well-protected.

What Do Home Security And Personal Security Have In Common?

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

When we discuss home security, we are referring to the measures we take to keep our home safe from burglars and vandals. We incorporate things such as burglar alarm systems, exterior lighting and door and window locks. In some cases, CCTV systems may be used, though this is regarded as an extreme measure.

Personal security refers to the safety of us as individuals. The essential similarity between home security and personal security is that preparation is key.

Preparation is of the utmost importance for both home security and personal security.

Here are some tips for keeping safe when you are out and about:

- Be assertive. If you are feeling nervous, try not to show it. Walk purposefully with your head up and a determined stride. If you are lost, get your map out somewhere with lots of people.
- Be alert. Bear in mind that being under the influence of drugs and alcohol will dull your instincts and awareness of situations.
- Trust your instincts. Your gut is telling you not to walk down that dark alley for a good reason!
- Be aware and don’t attract unwanted attention. Listening to music or talking on your mobile will make it harder to pay attention to your surroundings. Equally, flashing an expensive phone or piece of jewellery will attract the wrong kind of attention.
- Play safe. Try to stay with your friends. Make sure your phone is fully charged if you need it and that you have some cash on you.
We spend time, effort and money improving our home security systems, and should make sure we invest the same in our personal security.

How To Keep Up Home Security When You Are On Holiday

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Going on holiday helps to keep us calm because we get a chance to relax, let go of our worries and enjoy ourselves with the people we love. However, coming back to a house that has been burgled can make us feel worse than when we left, and in need of another holiday!

Most people who have been burgled not only have to deal with the loss of valuable or sentimental items which have been stolen, but also the possibility of increased insurance premiums and the fact that they no longer feel safe in their own homes due to poor home security systems.

There are things that you can do to maintain your home security while you are away and prevent yourself being in this terrible situation on your return from holiday.

It might sound obvious, but cancelling your milk and paper deliveries is the first thing that you should do to maintain your home security. A row of full milk bottles and overflowing newspapers is a sure sign of an empty house, and this is the kind of thing would-be burglars are looking for.

Mowing your lawn and keeping your garden tidy and up to scratch will also make the property look cared for, and therefore lived-in. This works conversely, too: if your house looks forgotten and possibly abandoned from outside, a burglar may try to investigate. That’s probably the best reason to pull up some weeds and paint your windowsills.

Tell your neighbours that you are away, so that they can be aware of anything suspicious. Burglar alarm systems, whilst an effective deterrent, may only need to be used in dire situations if these simple tips are followed.

Follow these tips for optimising your home security and you can relax on the beach knowing your home is safe.

Top Tips For Improving Your Home Security

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

As well as installing a burglar alarm system or CCTV cameras, there are measures that you can take to improve your home security without incurring huge costs or making it easy for burglars to get into your home.

Here are our top tips for safeguarding your home:

1. Keep windows secure
Get your windows fitted to the required British Standards, and consider replacing the glass with laminated glass as it is tougher. Locks on windows – especially visible ones – will put potential burglars off.

2. Strengthen the security of your doors
Ensure your doors are fitted to an approved standard, and if they need to be made stronger incorporate steel strips to the frame and lock. All doors should have deadlocks and viewers, so you don’t have to let strangers in.

3. Incorporate defensive gardening
Plant thorny shrubs around your boundaries, and use strong gates or fences. Don’t make it easy for burglars to hide – trim back hedges and install sensor lighting.

4. Be discreet about your burglar alarms – or not?
Some people think that you shouldn’t advertise the fact that you have a burglar alarm installed, because it might lead potential thieves to think that you have enough valuables to warrant protecting. However, this is not accepted thinking, and since one of the ways that burglar alarms prevent burglaries is by deterring thieves in the first instance, the prominent placing of a ‘bell box’ is a good idea.

Follow these tips and your common sense (close windows and lock doors, let neighbours know when you are on holiday) and you should have a burglar-free existence!

How Effective Are Burglar Alarms In Deterring Thieves From Your Home?

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

The number of home burglaries had dropped off in recent years, only to rise again during the recession. This makes burglar alarms still a necessity for people who don’t feel safe in their homes – due to previous burglaries or living in an area prone to burglaries – or people who feel that their home or valuables require additional protection. People who travel a lot may want to consider installing burglar alarms because an unoccupied house is a more tempting target.

It’s hard to get definitive figures on the effectiveness of burglar alarms in deterring criminals. Some put it at 90% effective, while others say the number is close to 40%.

Others may say – especially some of the less scrupulous companies who install burglar alarm systems – that it all depends on the burglar alarm, and the more effective burglar alarms cost more, so you should spend as much as possible.

The truth is you could spend as little as £50 on a DIY burglar alarm or around £1000 on one of the more expensive ones.

The best advice is to ascertain whether you really need a burglar alarm system or not. Are you elderly and living alone? Are you often away on business?

Then, contact an approved company – or enquire with your neighbours – and invite them to look at your property for a quote. Get three written quotes, examine the contract and see who gives you the best deal.

The installation of a burglar alarm will hopefully deter burglars from attempting to break in, stop them from taking anything and getting away.
