Burglar Alarms - Police and Fire Response

One of the benefits of a modern burglar alarms systems is the monitoring station - where a triggered alarm from your property can be reported to the appropriate emergency service for a response. Adding this element to your alarm system gives you additional peace of mind; the knowledge that if the alarm is triggered whilst you're at work or on holiday, someone will come out to make sure your property is still secure.

Checking your burglar alarm response

Statistics show that over 90% of alarms are false alarms, triggered by user error, weather conditions, electrical failure within the alarm system and other problems. This high level of error means that the police and the fire service have adopted procedures that allow them to respond to what they think are real problems, and to prioritise your alarm response around the other demands on their time. This doesn't mean that it's not worth adding a response element to your burglar alarm, but that you need to understand how the response system works.

Working with the emergency services

If your burglar alarms has a response element added, it will be remotely connected to a monitoring station. When your alarm is triggered, a message is sent to the station and it can identify your property from a unique number that has been assigned to you. The police or fire service is alerted that there is a problem at your property. To begin with, the services will treat your alarm as a priority and will send out the appropriate response vehicles. If it proves to be a false alarm, this will be noted and you will be informed, if the alarm occurred when you were away from the property. Many police forces set a limit to the way they will respond to an alarm after a number of false alarms have been attended. This varies from assessing the priority of your alarm against other matters to removing you from the response list altogether. For this reason, it's always worth talking to your local crime prevention officer or visiting your local police station to check how they deal with burglar alarm responses.
