Burglar Alarms FAQ

It's normal to have questions about the benefits of installing a burglar alarm and how the installation process works. Here are some of the questions we are often asked - if you can't find the answer you're looking for here, just give us a call on 0845 644 9321 and we'll be happy to help.

Do I really need a burglar alarm?

An increasing number of people are choosing to install burglar alarms to protect their property. If you want to reduce the chances of someone breaking into your home, a burglar alarm is a good place to start.

Do I need to spend a lot of money?

As with most products, the bigger the market, the lower the price. You could get a quality burglar alarms system for your home for under £300. You can spend more than this if you want to, by making your system more comprehensive; adding extra motion sensors for example or fitting vibration sensors to your windows, but you don't have to do this in order to get a good working burglar alarm.

Where do I start?

The best thing to do is to arrange a security survey. This will help you to see which areas of your home need protection. An experienced surveyor will be able to tell you whether a burglar alarm will be useful to you, and what type of system might be best. This gives you all the information you need, without having to commit to buying a burglar alarm straight away.

Will my alarm be connected to a police station?

You can choose to have a response element to your alarm, although many people decide just to have the alarm system on its own. If you add the response option, your alarm is connected to a monitoring station. When your alarm goes off, the monitoring station will inform the police and they will respond to your alarm.

Can other people access my alarm?

If you have people coming into your home regularly, such as a cleaner or a childcare provider, you can give them an unique code that allows them to turn the alarm off. This code can be different from the one you use. When people no longer need access to your home, you can cancel the code, and they will not be able to bypass the alarm unless you give them a new code.

What if my alarm goes off accidentally?

Your alarm will normally come with a maintenance contract, where it will be checked on an annual or semi-annual basis to make sure it is working properly. If you have problems with your alarm between checks, you can usually call out a maintenance engineer who will sort the problem out for you.
